Private Label Distributor Cans Paper-Based Inventory Processes

When shopping in our go-to stores, we don’t often think of how our favourite private label brands end up on the shelves. Since 1993, private label products distributor United Exchange Corporation has delivered high-quality products to major retailers across the world. The global company supplies a variety of goods, including food—it’s a major producer of ramen— household cleaners, and health and personal care products.

Improving Operations Through Automation

Curing retailers’ needs
Having the flexibility to meet shoppers’ shifting needs has been critical to United Exchange Corp. earning the business of leading retailers and growing to three locations in the US and South Korea. The family-owned business has a network of contract manufacturers across Asia and North America capable of making products ranging from pet pads to toothbrushes to antifungal cream.
Manual processes boil over
The distributor used paper-based processes to manage inventory in its warehouses, which led to lost goods and poor accountability. Its legacy, on-premises Accpac accounting system (now Sage 300) only allowed a handful of people to log in simultaneously, which increasingly became a hindrance. United Exchange chose NetSuite as a replacement so that it could digitalise, centralise, and automate its operations.
Cleaning up warehouse operations
Inspections previously managed on paper are now automatically triggered and tracked in NetSuite Quality Management(opens in a new tab) whenever UEC receives new inventory, keeping everyone on the same page. Order picking is faster with handheld scanners running NetSuite Warehouse Management System that show real-time inventory data and guide daily cycle counts. Once orders are ready to ship, the system automatically sends invoices to customers, accelerating the order-to-cash cycle.
Continuously refining processes
These automations have helped the business ultimately reduce headcount by about 20 people. United Exchange also works closely with NetSuite Advanced Customer Support (ACS) to continuously improve processes, such as creating a report that helps with inventory forecasting and a template that helped consolidate all support cases in NetSuite. The business is moving all FDA validation documents to NetSuite to ease audits.
